Día 8: El Tigre Excursion

As if this weekend wasn't exciting enough already, today, I think I died and went to heaven: Tigre. El Tigre is a river-town on the delta, where the island inhabitants live without cars. Everything is run by boat, including the grocery stores and schools, which literally float on by the island houses and ring a bell to let everyone know they are have arrived!

El Tigre
El Tigre was about a 40 minute train ride out of the city. When we got there, I was speechless. Tigre was gorgeous beyond gorgeous. We took a boat tour of the delta, and saw the homes, buildings, and of course- the floating grocery store! During the boat tour, I was extremely happy when the crew brought us a little cup of coffee and an Alflajor (see previous post if you forgot what this amazing treat is! I'm obsessed!). The island homes on Tigre are adorable; if I could retire and go anywhere, I'll probably come back to Tigre!

The Grocery Store! If only Meijer were this cool...

After the boat tour, we walked to Puerta de Fruta, which was a giant market with a variety of little shops. We got 3 hours to shop and eat lunch, was was perfect. For lunch, I had an Choripan, which is kind of like a chicken sandwich, but with spicy sausage. The weather today was perfect, with the sun shining, and wind just barely blowing.

After Tigre, we boarded a bus and began the drive back to the city of Buenos Aires. On the way back to the city, we stopped at a cafe on the coast for the late-afternoon merienda (snack). The snack was croissants, brownie bites, dulce de leche cookies, and tostadas (like grilled cheese, but on very thin bread with ham). We also got a drink, and I (like many), chose a submarino! Let me explain: you get a glass of hot milk and a chocolate bar; you drop the chocolate bar in the milk (like a submarine), and stir until the chocolate melts! Ahh! If I hadn't thought I was in heaven before, I certainly was now!

Submarino! Extreme Hot Chocolate.

Merienda

After the merienda, we had a little free time to enjoy the view and take pictures. I cannot express how beautiful it was. We got to see Buenos Aires from afar, while standing on the coast of Argentina.

This day was perfect, but am pretty wiped out from all this activity! Tomorrow, we are off to La Feria de Matederos, another large market/craft venue. I can't believe that today it has only been 1 week since I first arrived...so far this has been a great experience. I do miss everyone back home though and can't wait to be back, but until then, it's back to la vida loca for me! Chau chau (byeee)!
