Día 16: San Telmo, S'mores, & Soccer

As the sun sets here in Buenos Aires, I can definitely day this weekend was successful! Today was Sunday, which means the same thing as last Sunday: Fería day!

The destination fería this time: San Telmo! The San Telmo feria is one of the city's biggest and most popular Sunday markets. Today I was one out of the estimated 10,000 people that attend it every weekend! San Telmo is like a carnival on steroids, minus the rides: hundreds (upon hundreds) of craft stands; food vendors selling everything from hotdogs, to empandas, to muffins; perfomers singing, dancing, playing instruments (or all of the above at once!); and lots of places to shop! San Telmo has it all- and then some.

San Telmo: The Feria that goes on for miles!

The feria is traditionally an antiques market, so many tables had interesting (and bizarre) assortments of old telephones, knives, jewelry, lanterns...the list goes on! The feria is also home to many local artists, selling handmade jewelry, clothing, art, and food. It's easy to spend hours and hours at this feria, as every step down the cobblestone road brings something new to look at!

Knick-knacks galore!

Like mentioned before, San Telmo has everything, except any room for personal space! Ayy! Being such a weekend hot spot with so many visitors +  a culture that likes to be up-close and personal, I quickly began to miss my "American personal space bubble"! Haha! We took a lunch break in a cute, cheap cafe, where we were able to refuel, rest, and relax for a bit! I ate a "sandwich especial": a juicy pork sandwich with dried tomatoes, greens, and slices of cheese/ham. I was also given a few packs of mayonnaise, which is another difference from the food in America; the mayonnaise here is much sweeter- and the packet I was given at lunch was also lemon flavored! It was different, but tasty!

After lunch, we hit the market again. We left at 6:00pm, with our gangas (deals) in hand! My favorite item of the day? Justin Bieber mittens! Haha! And no, I did not buy them, don't worry! Tonight, Cecilia and Freddy left to go to a friend's birthday party, but left dinner out for Anissa and I to warm up. Once again, we had milanesa (breaded chicken); the every-other-day house special! Haha! It's basically just like a big chicken tender patty. After eating the milanesa, Anissa and I were craving some sort of dessert, since Freddy and Cecilia never eat it. We got creative and made Dulce de Leche s'mores! We felt like little children again, sneaking dessert while the "parents" were out! While making our "dessert", we were suddenly frightened by the loud sound of car horn honking, dogs barking, and screaming from out in the streets. I thought someone being mugged or murdered, but then we realized the loud voices were screaming "GOALLLLLLLL! GOALLLL!" Tonight is a Boca vs. River Soccer game, and Boca must have just scored! But to me, it wasn't the happy, joyful cheering you'd find at an American game; this was barbaric, serious, and downright macho screaming! Yikes! I'm glad we were in the safety of our apartment, eating secret smores! ;)

This + Graham Cracker + Marshmellow = YES.

If I had to put a face to the screaming I heard at dinner, this would be it-
but yelling out an apartment window instead.
