Día 17: A close encounter, but lived to tell the story (and go shopping)

I'm beginning my third week here in Buenos Aires, which is so crazy- I feel like I just got here, but yet also feel like this is my new mini-home. Overall, the day was pretty average, with the exception of a few things here and there; Buenos Aires nevers disappoints when it comes to keeping things interesting! I had my midterm exam today, which went well, but not that exciting. However, after leaving the University this afternoon, a bunch of us were walking up the street, on our way to the ISA office a few blocks away. Suddenly, a middle-aged woman came rapidly walking towards us, advising us (in Spanish), "turn around! turn around! That group of guys up ahead has a knife!" Yeah, we quickly turned around and found a new street to walk up. I was surprised that even in Belgrano, one of the nicest and safest neighborhoods here, something like that would happen, but it just goes to prove that "danger is everywhere". It pays to just use common sense and be aware...and to listen to older women in the streets! I doubt the gang would have done anything but maybe show us the knife as a "threat", but we definitely weren't taking any chances!

After avoiding a the knife-wielding gang, I met up with 2 of my friends here to check out the leather district. Argentina is famous for anything cattle related, leather being one of them! We boarded a city bus, which is not my favorite, but we successfully got off at the right stop this time! Whew! The leather district was great, and pretty affordable if you're looking for a nice leather jacket or purse. However, I was on the mission for leather boots, and didn't fall in love with any this time,...but I feel like they are out there somewhere!

Leather, leather, everywhere.

We walked back through Palermo after the leather district and were able to see the streets and shops all lit up in the dark- beautiful! Even though we were just walking and window shopping, it was so much fun to be out in the city, experiencing all it has to offer. :)

I can't believe this has been my home for the past few weeks!
